Use a citation to find the full text!

You can use the information in a citation to find the full text of an article, book, or website. This 6 minute tutorial will help you learn how!

The tutorial will show you:
  • library tools to use
  • techniques and tips

This is useful to know when:

  • your instructor gives you a citation and tells you to read the article, book, or webiste
  • you find an abstract in a database or on the web with no linked full text
  • your instructor refers to research or research literature in a lecture and you want to read up on it
  • you're doing citation chaining/citation chasing - this is where you use the bibliography of a source to find more related sources.

It's a common problem - to have a citation and no link to full text. I've blogged about it before. I hope you'll find the solutions in this short tutorial to be useful!

Question of the Week: Citing an E-Book

Q: How do I cite an e-book in APA style?

A: It's a lot like citing a regular book, but you'll need to add the date that you read the book and the e-book provider or URL. Here's an example:

McKeever, M. P. (2005). How to write a business plan. Berkeley: Nolo. Retrieved March 14, 2008, from Netlibrary database.

The in-text citation will be just like a book. You'll use the author's last name, year, and page number.

For more help and info, take a look at the APA guide. There are links to more APA guides at the end of that guide. You can also contact your librarian.

Good luck on your final papers and projects!

Word 2007 Can Help You Cite Your Sources!

This month, all the GU/MSB campus computers will be upgraded to Office 2007.
There's a new feature in Word 2007 that I think you'll be excited about. Word 2007 will help you keep track of your citations! It works with both APA and MLA citation styles. I've uploaded a printable, PDF guide to the library's website.

If you have any further questions about citing your sources, please ask your instructor or a librarian.

Do you need citation help?

You know the library databases are great for finding research, but did you know the library databases can help you create your bibliography too? That’s right! Whether you’re doing APA or MLA style, the library databases can put the article information into the proper format for you.

  • In InfoTrac databases, click on the “citation tools” or “how to cite” buttons.
  • In the ProQuest databases, click the “cite this” button.
  • In EBSCOhost databases, click the “print,” “email,” or “save” buttons.

Don’t stress about your List of References or Works Cited! Let the databases help you make it easier to finish that research paper on time.

Here are some more websites to help you with your citations:

Happy researching! If you need assistance, please contact a librarian!
