    LexisNexis Academic Library Database Errors

LexisNexis Academic is continuing to have some errors when you try to access it from off campus. I'm working with them to try to fix the problem.

In the meantime, try this solution:
Go back to the library databases page (using the back button in the same browser window) and click on the LexisNexis link again.
I hope this problem was not too frustrating for you. I know it's not working correctly, but I hope to have it working well soon.
    Thank you for your patience.

    Health Information Online

I came across this article today. It has a wonderful summary of useful websites for free health information. The categories are: General interest sites, Medical research sites, Patient sites, Disease specific sites, and Web tools.

I'd like to add to that list. The GU/MSB library offers additional online health information to you for free (the library buys it for you). Here are some highlights:

    • Interactive Functional Anatomy - Images and animations of the human muscular system in motion.

    • Health Reference Center - online encyclopedia of disease, wellness, body systems and more

    • EBSCO's AltHealth Watch - Alternative medicine information

    • Gale's Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Collection - articles about treatment techniques

    • EBSCO's CINAHL - definitive index for nurses/ nursing students

    • ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health - scholarly and trade articles for health professionals

    • Gale's Health Reference Center Academic - reference books and articles for health professionals

    • Gale's Nursing and Allied Health Collection - articles about specialized care, treatment and management.

Click here to search these database collections!

Please contact your librarian with any quesions about these databases.

    We value your input

We've got a couple of trial databases this month. If you take a look at them, please take the time to let us know what you think. When we trial a database it is because we are thinking of purchasing it and your opinion is important.

    Here are our trials:
    • LexisNexis Academic - this is a great database! It's strong with news, business, and legal information. Our decision for this database will likely come down to price and how it fits in with our other databases.
    • Global Road Warrior - this is a map and cultural database. We already have a similar database called WorldAtlas. We're investigating the differences.

Use a citation to find the full text!

You can use the information in a citation to find the full text of an article, book, or website. This 6 minute tutorial will help you learn how!

    The tutorial will show you:
    • library tools to use
    • techniques and tips

This is useful to know when:

    • your instructor gives you a citation and tells you to read the article, book, or webiste
    • you find an abstract in a database or on the web with no linked full text
    • your instructor refers to research or research literature in a lecture and you want to read up on it
    • you're doing citation chaining/citation chasing - this is where you use the bibliography of a source to find more related sources.

It's a common problem - to have a citation and no link to full text. I've blogged about it before. I hope you'll find the solutions in this short tutorial to be useful!

Question of the Week: Surgery Videos

People often ask me how to find videos. While YouTube and other web video collections can be useful, not everything is available for free on the web. I'd like to share with you how to find a special collection of surgery videos.

You can find over 200 videos of and about surgeries in Gales' Health Reference Center Academic! Watch a three minute demonstrative video here.

If you can't watch the video, here are the steps:
    1. From the library's homepage, click on "subscription databases"
    2. Click on Gale
    3. Click on Health Reference Center Academic
    4. Use the pull-down menu to select "publisher name"
    5. Type or-live into the search box next to "publisher name" and click the search button
    6. Click the "multimedia" tab
    7. If you'd like to narrow down your results, use the pull-down menu on the left to select "publication title"
    8. To watch a video, click on the title and then the URL.

Please contact your librarian, if you have questions.

    Question of the Week!

Q: I found the abstract for the article I want. How do I find the full text? It looks like there's a delay on the article in the database...

A: Sometimes publishers put a delay on periodicals in databases to encourage individuals and libraries to purchase the print version of the periodical.

    Here are your options:
    • The library does have some print periodicals. You can search for them by journal title in the catalog or see this list.
    • It is possible that a different database has the full text. Check the E-journal Portal. Need more info about using the E-journal Portal?
    • If you have time, there is also the option of interlibrary loan.

Don't forget, you can also ask your librarian!

    Question of the Week

Q: How do I find an article? I know the author, title, and magazine.

A: If you have a citation, but you're not sure which database to use, then try the E-Journal Portal.

    1. You can search for the magazine/journal/periodical title.

    2. Click on the database name.

    3. A pop-up window will appear. You can now find your article by searching for the article title or keywords. I clicked on "search within this publication" to get to the search screen. The database automatically entered JN "consumer reports." I added the "cell phone" search terms.

If you're not able to find what you're looking for in the e-journal portal or have other questions, be sure to ask your librarian!
