This book is a memoir of surviving the Iranian Revolution by a female English professor living in Tehran. Politics became very personal as she was forced out of her job at the University because she did not want to wear the veil. The women in Iran came under immense scrutiny after the country became the “Islamic Republic” and there were “morality police” patrolling the streets to make sure women were not showing any hair or wearing any makeup. Since she could not teach at the University any more, Professor Nafisi started her own clandestine English Literature class in her home with select female students. This is the story of the revolution through her eyes, and the lessons she and her students learned through the literature she taught. This book can be found in the Richfield Circulating Collection 820.9 NAF.--Read and reviewed by Erica Nutzman.
